Breakfast with Santa 2007

On Saturday December 8, 2007 the Lamond Community Center, MPDC PSA 402, and the Kids First Basketball Inc hosted a Breakfast with Santa.

Approximately 30 children and 10 adults came out on a cold dreary morning to have a memorable breakfast.

Dorothy Goings and Officer Greg Gulledge cooked the feast while Officer Antoine Reed played Santa Clause.

Officer Adriane Wilson, Robert Valentine, and myself (Officer Heather Straker) ran the show. We had gift bags for all the children that were filled with lots of goodies and toys.

No one left hungry or empty handed.

Thanks to everyone that participated and made this event a great success!

Guarding Yourself Against Burglaries

Don’t be a target.
Have you ever been locked out of your home? Were you able to get in anyway? Now think about it…if YOU could break into your own home, it’s just as easy for someone else to break in, too.
Many intruders will spend nomore than 60 seconds trying to break into a home. The best prediction of afuture burglary is a past burglary. Therefore, it is important to take preventive measures now.
Strong locks — and good neighbors who look out forone another — can be effective deterrents to burglars.
Here are a few tips that can help you keep you and your property safe and secure.
Check Your LocksMake sure every external door has astrong, well-installed dead bolt lock. Key-in-the-knob locks alone are notenough. Sliding glass doors offer easy access to burglars if they are not properlysecured. You can secure them by putting a broomstick or dowel in the inside track to jam the door, or by installing commercially available locks. To prevent the door being lifted off the track, drill a hole through the sliding door frame and the fixed frame. Then insert a pin in the hole.
Lock double-hung windows with keylocks or “pin” your windows by drillinga small hole at a 45 degree angle between the inner and outer frames, then insert a nail that can be removed. You should secure basement windows with grilles or grates (but make sure that they can be opened from the inside in case of fire).
NEVER hide keys around the outside ofyour home!! Instead, give an extra key to a neighbor you trust.
When you move into a new house or apartment, RE-KEY THE LOCKS.
Check Your Doors While we all like to feel that once we close and lock our doors, we’re safe and secure, the truth of the matter is that a lock on a flimsy door is about as effective as locking your car door but leaving the window down with your wallet on the front seat!
All outside doors should be metal orsolid wood. Install a peephole or wide angle viewer in all entry doors so that you can see who is outside without opening thedoor.
Door chains break easily and don’tkeep out intruders. If your doors don’t fit tightly in theirframes, install weather stripping around them.
Check the OutsideTake a look at your home from the outside, and keep in mind the following tips to help make your home as safe as it can be: Burglars HATE bright lights. Install outside lights and KEEP THEM ON at night. Motion-detector lights can be particularly effective.
Keep your yard clean. Prune shrubbery so it doesn’t hide windows or doors. Cut back tree limbs that a burglar could use to climb to an upper-level window.
If you travel, create the illusion that you are at home by getting timers that will turn lights (and perhaps a television or radio) on and off in different parts of your home throughout the day and•••••evening hours. Lights burning 24 hours a day signal an empty house! Leave shades, blinds and curtains in normal positions. And make sure you don’t let your mail and/or newspapers pile up!
Call the post office and newspaper to stop delivery or have a neighbor pick them up.
Make a list of your valuables, such as VCRs, stereos, computers, and jewelry. Take pictures of the items, list their serial numbers and description. This will help police if your home is burglarized.
Contact your District police station for a free home security survey.
When getting work done on your vehicle, leave only the vehicle key for the service personnel. The same goes for carpark attendants and valets. If you are having work done on your vehicle, give the service station your business address — not your home address.
Burglars Can Do More Than Just Steal While most burglars prefer to strike when no one is home, intruders can commit other crimes such as rape, robbery, and assault if they are surprised by someone entering the home, or if they pick a home that is occupied. If something looks questionable — a slit screen, a broken window, or an open door — DON’T GO IN! Call the police from a neighbor’s house, a cell phone, or a public phone.
At night, if you think you hear someone breaking in, leave safely IF YOU CAN, then call the police. If you can’t leave, lock yourself in a room with a phone and call the police. If an intruder is in your room, pretend you are asleep. One other important note — never leave a message on your answering machine that indicates that you may not be at home, or that you live alone. Instead, say, “We’re not available right now."
What if I Live in an Apartment?
While apartment living is a little different from living in a single family home, there are still some additional things that you can do to make sure that you, your loved ones, and your property remain safe and secure. Similar to Neighborhood Watch, members of an Apartment Watch learn how to make their homes more secure, watch out for one another and members of the community, and report crime and suspicious activity to the police.
Some things you can do:
Never let anyone you don’t know into your building or past security doors!
Organize citizen patrols to walk around the apartment complex and alert police to crime and suspicious activities. DON’T FORGET to patrol parkinglots, stairways, laundry rooms, and playgrounds.
Publish a newsletter that gives local crime news, recognizes Apartment Watch captains, and highlights community activities. Have a reception in the lobby of your building or a cookout on common property so neighbors can get to know one another. Start a Safe Haven Program for children – places where they can go in emergency or scary situations.
Check the complex on a regular basis for problems such as burned-out light bulbs, dark corridors, uncollected trash, or broken locks on mailboxes and doors. Report any such problems to the buildingmanager. Keep pressure on management to make sure it provides adequate security.
Organize meetings to brainstorm how you can help each other, such as starting an escort service for the elderly.
Get Involved! No one individual or agency working alone can prevent crime. It takes police and citizens working in partnership. The District of Columbia’s community policing strategy provides many ways for police and communities to work together to prevent crime and build safer neighborhoods. These include regular PSA (Police Service Area) meetings in your community, problem-solving groups, citizen patrols and more.

Holiday Safety Seminar

The Holiday Safety Seminar which was held yesterday November 14, 2007 at the NEW Kennedy Senior Wellness Center located at 324 Kennedy Street NW. We had a lovely time with about 30 in participation. I presented a PowerPoint which highlighted numerous safety tips. Not only ones that can be used this time of year, but ones that can carry on throughout the whole year.
We enjoyed the time of fellowship and we also engaged in good discussion. A couple of our seniors had life experiences to share with the group. Many questions were asked and input was made.
Thanks for all of those who participated and we hope to have another event like this soon.

Paul Public Charter School Honors First Lady of the City Mrs. Michelle Fenty

On October 30, 2007 students and faculty of Paul Public Charter School located on 7th Street NW between Peabody St. and Missouri Ave. NW took time out of there day to honor the Fist Lady of Washington, DC, Mrs. Michelle Fenty.

The children expressed there many talented artistic side through music, dancing, and poetry reciting.

Many faculty of the Paul Public Charter School were recognized as well, but the main recognition was for Mrs. Fenty.

With her soft accented voice she gave an amazing speech about the importance of reading. This was the second time Mrs. Fenty visited the school. Earlier in the year she read stories to the children.

I personally had the opportunity to attend this wonderful ceremony and had a magnificent time.

One of the students gave me a personal tour of the newly renovated school. All the children were well behaved and knowledgeable.
It was a very nice day and I am grateful I was invited to attend this wonderful event.

Thanks Paul Public Charter School

LaSalle Elementary Back-2-School Party

On Friday August 25, 2007, the last official day of summer vacation, the Metropolitan Police Department 4th District PSA 402 conducted a Back-2-School Party.

We had games such as relay races, potato sack races, cheer leading, chalk drawing, and much more. We also had pizza provided by Ledo's of Georgia Avenue NW and cotton candy.
The children enjoyed the prizes they won and most of all the 50 backpacks that we gave away.
Inside each backpack were all the school supplies needed for the semester of school.

The children along with their parents lined up early to receive a ticket for the backpacks. The first 50 ranging in ages of 6-12 were the lucky ones.

We did not let any child go empty handed. We handed out pencils and other school supplies for those who did not receive a backpack.

I want to thank LaSalle Elementary School for letting us hold this great event at their school.
Officer Adriane Wilson for her continuous help and support for not only this event, but all the events that were hosted this summer.

Mr. Robert Washington from Takoma Community Center who lent a helping hand. Mr. Sean Conley (Ward 4 Director DPR) for stopping by and showing his support.

Lastly for the children, without you all we would not have the opportunity to host these great events.

PSA 402 Crime Alert

I want to inform everyone that within the last month a spree of robberies have been occurring at Bus Stops along the 14th and 16th Street corridors.
We have experienced 3 in PSA 402 alone but 9 total within the 4th District.

Some safety tips while waiting for the bus:
Be vigilant (do not let anyone get to close even if they look "normal")
Try not to carry large amounts of cash or other valuables on you.
If possible wait at a bus stop with a crowd of people.
Carry some type of noise device (whistle)
Keep your house keys in a separate place.
If you are a victim of this crime or any crime CALL 911 immediately, wait for the police to arrive, and give a good description of the suspect and also the direction of escape.

For more information please feel free to contact me directly @ (202) 715-7411.

Thank you and be safe!

National Night Out 2007

Although the temperatures this year (just like last year) were extreme, “Night Out” in PSA 402 was well attended. It is estimated that approximately eight hundred (800) residents participated in the “Night Out” festivities.

For those of you that were not able to attend the gathering, you missed a fun filled evening. Activities such as Bingo (hosted by DC Lottery), dancing & a Moon Bounce kept all ages happy.

I’d like to send a special thanks to the vendors that donated products and or services to make “Night Out” successful. Without the generous support of these dedicated business owners that give so graciously, National Night Out wouldn’t be the huge success story that is was again this year.
So, without further ado….

Many thanks to OUTBACK STEAKHOUSE located at the PG Mall in Hyattsville, MD, for donating the food once again this year, and especially to the staff that worked so hard in the HOT sun over a VERY HOT grill to make sure that all that those who attended National Night Out 2007 were fed.
Thanks to Safeway and Giant Food Store management for providing beverages for everyone.

Thank you to CLASSIC TENTS of Silver Spring, MD for donating the five (5) tents that provided us with comfort and shelter in the extremely hot temperatures. Also, thank you to the employees of CLASSIC TENTS that erected the tents for us.

Thanks to PERFECT SETTINGS of Washington D.C. for the use their tables, chairs & beautiful linens for the tables.

Much gratitude to the folks at JOURNEYS CROSSING, A Christian Church located in Gaithersburg, MD. The wonderful members of this church contacted me when they heard about National Night Out; they wanted to be part of this great community event in PSA 402! They arrived with their very own Ice Cream Truck, and were prepared to GIVE AWAY more than six hundred (600) bars of ice cream.

Thank you to AMERIGROUP for donating the Moon Bounce that the children had a blast in!

As always, many thanks to the Lt. J. Porter with the Special Operations Division of the Metropolitan Police Department for giving priority to PSA 402 with regards to the landing of the Helicopter on the field at the special occasion. On a day such as National Night Out, the Helicopter is a hot item & I’m always honored that they make every effort to accommodate my requests to “show off” the MPDC “bird in the sky”. The helicopter was flown and staffed with MPD Air Officers Norman Pope, James Haskel, & Nathan Butler.
In spite of the extreme heat, the MPD Mounted Patrol Unit with Officer M. Lee and his partner put on a show for the crowd.

Other participants in attendance for the Night Out gathering were DDOT along with the MPD Traffic Safety Unit, DCRA and the Emergency Management Agency. Thank you to these vital agencies for providing information and services to the community.

Special guest that made it to our “Night Out Against Crime” were, Mayor A. Fenty, Ward 4 Councilmember Muriel Bowser, Representatives from the office of Councilmember Kwame Brown, and our very own 4th District Commander Hilton Burton.

Also, I’d like to recognize the many volunteers that help to run the various stations throughout the evening, many of whom worked non-stop, not even get a break to explore the festivities themselves.

“NIGHT OUT” VOLUNTEERES

MS. JUDY MOY
MR. AND MRS. BELL
MS. ROUNDTREE
MS. C. SANFORD

Personal thanks to the entire PSA 402 NNO Committee

Ms. Mary Sanford
Ms. Diane Miller
Ms. Sylvia Gwathmey
Ms. Nadine Bell
Ms. Inday Williams
Ms. Cassandra Kingsberry
Ms. Gloria Palmer

On a final note, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the two Community Beat officers that were dedicated to helping me with “Night Out” and, by doing so, their assistance made a huge impact on my “work load” this year.
Officer A. Wilson for being at the site early in the morning and assisting with the set-up, and for staying long after the event was over to help with the clean-up.
And, Officer R. Valentine, for staying at his assigned post throughout the entire event, and assisting with the huge clean-up effort after the event was over.

I hope everyone that attended the National Night Out Event had a great time.
Thanks for supporting the family of PSA 402!

A look back at PSA 402 2006

As I reflect on 2006, I am reminded of what a great year it has been for me working with all of you, the wonderful citizens of the 4th District.
All of you have truly made it a pleasure for me to put on my uniform each and every day that I come into work.

The overwhelming support I’ve received throughout the year, and continue to receive form all of you is incredible.
I cannot think of a single time that I’ve called on any of you for donations, community support for events, or volunteering of your personal time, and you all have not stepped up to the plate and offered your support.

Throughout the year I’ve organized many community events; most of the events where for the benefit of the young people. I came to realize quite quickly how much the community takes a strong interest in our children.
So many businesses, some within the 4th District, many not within the 4d parameters, have donated thousands of dollars in cash and resources for events I organized for our youth.

I can recall the beautiful tents that adorned the football field of Coolidge High School for National Night Out 2006. The Tents were donated by Classic Tents of Silver Spring, MD. The tents were put up by employees (including the owner of the company) on one of the hottest summer days in years in the DC area. Classic Tents as you may have noticed, is located in Silver Spring, MD, obviously outside of the 4th District, but an example of how much people care about our community.
Perfect Settings donated all of the chairs, tables and table cloths for the National Night Out 2006 event.
Outback Steakhouse of Hyattsville, MD donated all of the food for our PSA 402 National Night Out 2006 extravaganza. Take notice once again that this franchise owned restaurant is located outside of the District.

It’s easy to conclude that the donations given for the National Night Out 2006 event, easily cost the businesses involved thousands and thousands of dollars. Yet, business owners, as well as you, the local citizens, offered your time, money and resources freely and made the event a huge success for our community.

I reflect on the Youth Intervention Meetings that were held for several months in 2006.
Mc Donald’s Restaurant, located on the corner of Georgia Avenue & Peabody Street donated dozens of value meals for the children.
AMC Movie Theaters donated free movie tickets. Best Buy, Payless Shoes and Target donated gift cards. In addition, many other local businesses donated prizes and food for the meetings.

During the month of August, at the recommendation of Citizens Aware President, Yvonne Jefferson, PSA 402 hosted a job fair for the community.
MPDC, DC EMS & Fire Rescue were on hand to answer questions and point young people in the right direction for joining the Cadet Programs.
Giant Food was present and performed on the spot interviews. DC Department of Employment Services took part in the fair and was seeking qualified individuals as well. The Job Fair was well attended throughout the afternoon and evening, and I considered it to be another successful community event.
I was pleased to learn during a follow up call with Giant Food, two of the individuals that applied for employment at the Job Fair were hired.

I think back to the Halloween Party that I put on for our children. Once again local businesses answered my call for donations with a great response.
One request is all I needed to make on our ‘4D list serve’ and the overwhelming response I received from the community was enormous. To this day, I still have a generous supply of leftover candy that I use for events that take place.
All of the community events that I was part of this past year were special to me, however, the event that touched me the most was my decision to have the Fourth District sponsor five (5) families in need for Christmas. Once again, the outpouring of financial support from the community was incredible.
When word got out about a recently widowed father of ten children (10), local citizens, business owners and Police Officers stepped up to offer money so that the children of this family could have a great Christmas. What a fantastic feeling it was to deliver Christmas gifts to all of the families that were chosen. I’m hoping to be able to make this a yearly tradition here at the 4th District.
I close by saying THANK YOU. THANK YOU. THANKYOU.
Without your generosity and support none of the events that took place this year would have been possible.
Good Luck in 2007, I look forward to being of service to all of you!!

Officer H. Straker
