National Night Out 2007

Although the temperatures this year (just like last year) were extreme, “Night Out” in PSA 402 was well attended. It is estimated that approximately eight hundred (800) residents participated in the “Night Out” festivities.

For those of you that were not able to attend the gathering, you missed a fun filled evening. Activities such as Bingo (hosted by DC Lottery), dancing & a Moon Bounce kept all ages happy.

I’d like to send a special thanks to the vendors that donated products and or services to make “Night Out” successful. Without the generous support of these dedicated business owners that give so graciously, National Night Out wouldn’t be the huge success story that is was again this year.
So, without further ado….

Many thanks to OUTBACK STEAKHOUSE located at the PG Mall in Hyattsville, MD, for donating the food once again this year, and especially to the staff that worked so hard in the HOT sun over a VERY HOT grill to make sure that all that those who attended National Night Out 2007 were fed.
Thanks to Safeway and Giant Food Store management for providing beverages for everyone.

Thank you to CLASSIC TENTS of Silver Spring, MD for donating the five (5) tents that provided us with comfort and shelter in the extremely hot temperatures. Also, thank you to the employees of CLASSIC TENTS that erected the tents for us.

Thanks to PERFECT SETTINGS of Washington D.C. for the use their tables, chairs & beautiful linens for the tables.

Much gratitude to the folks at JOURNEYS CROSSING, A Christian Church located in Gaithersburg, MD. The wonderful members of this church contacted me when they heard about National Night Out; they wanted to be part of this great community event in PSA 402! They arrived with their very own Ice Cream Truck, and were prepared to GIVE AWAY more than six hundred (600) bars of ice cream.

Thank you to AMERIGROUP for donating the Moon Bounce that the children had a blast in!

As always, many thanks to the Lt. J. Porter with the Special Operations Division of the Metropolitan Police Department for giving priority to PSA 402 with regards to the landing of the Helicopter on the field at the special occasion. On a day such as National Night Out, the Helicopter is a hot item & I’m always honored that they make every effort to accommodate my requests to “show off” the MPDC “bird in the sky”. The helicopter was flown and staffed with MPD Air Officers Norman Pope, James Haskel, & Nathan Butler.
In spite of the extreme heat, the MPD Mounted Patrol Unit with Officer M. Lee and his partner put on a show for the crowd.

Other participants in attendance for the Night Out gathering were DDOT along with the MPD Traffic Safety Unit, DCRA and the Emergency Management Agency. Thank you to these vital agencies for providing information and services to the community.

Special guest that made it to our “Night Out Against Crime” were, Mayor A. Fenty, Ward 4 Councilmember Muriel Bowser, Representatives from the office of Councilmember Kwame Brown, and our very own 4th District Commander Hilton Burton.

Also, I’d like to recognize the many volunteers that help to run the various stations throughout the evening, many of whom worked non-stop, not even get a break to explore the festivities themselves.

On a final note, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the two Community Beat officers that were dedicated to helping me with “Night Out” and, by doing so, their assistance made a huge impact on my “work load” this year.
Officer A. Wilson for being at the site early in the morning and assisting with the set-up, and for staying long after the event was over to help with the clean-up.
And, Officer R. Valentine, for staying at his assigned post throughout the entire event, and assisting with the huge clean-up effort after the event was over.

I hope everyone that attended the National Night Out Event had a great time.
Thanks for supporting the family of PSA 402!
