Whittier Educational Center (6201 5th Street NW) and the Washington Animal Rescue League (71 Oglethorpe St., NW) have been working the entire school year on a photography project entitled, “A Day in the Life at the Shelter.”
The 15 5th graders (10- and 11-year-olds) were selected to create a portfolio of their favorite animals that are being housed at the Washington Animal Rescue League.
The students kept a journal in which they wrote stories and poetry about their favorite furry friends and used the lessons they learned in photography to create a picture board to display on Thursday, May 7, 2009 at the prestigious Rayburn House Office Building, which is located on Capitol Hill. The Guest of Honor and our hostess was the Honorable Congresswomen Eleanor Holmes Norton. The Congresswomen thanked the students for allowing their works of art to be displayed for all members of congress to see.
