MOTORISTS FACE MORE THAN PEDESTRIANS ON SPEED AWARENESS DAY(S)

On November 18th and 20th, 2008, in response to traffic concerns voiced by local residents and schools officials alike, officers of the Metropolitan Police Department (Fourth District, PSA 402)conducted “Speed Awareness Day(s)”.

Riggs Road NE as well as Kansas Avenue NE are two major thoroughfares traveled daily by inbound/outbound Maryland commuters. Because these two arteries have been widely criticized by area residents due to speeding, special traffic enforcement was given to these two routes.

Students in grades 3 thru 6 from area schools such as: LaSalle Elementary School, Roots Public Charter School, Ideal Academy, and Hope Charter School, took an active role in bringing attention to “speed awareness.” Participants from the mentioned schools displayed hand-made posters highlighting the flagrant disregard (some) motorist display by speeding through school zones and, by failing to observe pedestrians. In addition to the attention grabbing posters, students also verbalized their frustrations to motorists by chanting “SLOW DOWN” as they drove by.

As a result of intense traffic enforcement during Speed Awareness Days’, MPD Officers issued dozens of moving infractions, including violations for: speeding, use of cell phone, and non-use of seat belts.

Disobeying traffic regulations will not be tolerated in the District; in an effort to uphold traffic rules and regulations, PSA 402 officers will continue to conduct sporadic traffic enforcement along these and other routes in the future.
