PSA 402’S EASTER “EGGSTRAVAGANZA” -VS- THE WHITE HOUSE EASTER EGG ROLL

The annual White House Easter Egg Roll has always been one of Washington DC’s most sought after events for children. This year, the Easter Egg Roll, which in the past was attended mostly by local families, came with an interesting twist; the World Wide Web.

In past years, Easter Egg Roll tickets were made available at the White House Gates, prior to the day of the event. However, this year, with the hopes of allowing more children the opportunity to attend the yearly event, President Obama, decided to make the tickets available exclusively on the Internet. Needless to say, people from all around the country jumped at the chance to participate in “Roll.” The popularity of the First Family, coupled with the fact that most American homes have access to the Internet, made it very difficult to obtain tickets this year. As a result, many local families that usually attend the yearly event were not able to score tickets.

Here in PSA 402, we also had an Easter Egg celebration so, I decided to do a (fun) side-by-side comparison of the two events to see if they measure up to one another.

The White House Easter Egg Roll
~ Over 30,000 people from 45 states including the District of Columbia attended.
~ Guest’s greeted at the White House gate by serious Secret Service Agents.
~ Children enjoyed musical entertainment provided by various musical entertainers.
~ Guest’s watched cooking demonstrations by White House Chef’s.
~ Children were confined to roll eggs in a predetermined space on the White House lawn.
~ All participating children received a “wooden” egg.

PSA 402 Easter “Eggstravaganza”
~ 85 children from the 4th District community attended.
~ Guest’s greeted by friendly neighborhood Officers Romayo Simon, Robert Valentine, and Heather Straker.
~ We had our own musical entertainer and DPR Site Manager Sherlita Settles.
~ The children enjoyed pizza from the world’s famous Ledo’s Pizza (Georgia Avenue)
~ The children hunted for eggs across several acres of open land at the Riggs LaSalle Community Center.
~ Participating children received eggs filled with money, jumbo eggs filled with candy, and movie passes.
It’s a well know fact: The annual White House Easter Egg Roll is without a doubt a privilege to attend. However, for all those that attended the PSA 402 Easter “Eggstravaganza”… those NOT lucky enough to obtain White House tickets, I thank you for your participation. Additionally, I hope to see you again next year!

Whittier Education Center visits with Congresswomen Norton

Whittier Educational Center (6201 5th Street NW) and the Washington Animal Rescue League (71 Oglethorpe St., NW) have been working the entire school year on a photography project entitled, “A Day in the Life at the Shelter.”
The 15 5th graders (10- and 11-year-olds) were selected to create a portfolio of their favorite animals that are being housed at the Washington Animal Rescue League.
The students kept a journal in which they wrote stories and poetry about their favorite furry friends and used the lessons they learned in photography to create a picture board to display on Thursday, May 7, 2009 at the prestigious Rayburn House Office Building, which is located on Capitol Hill. The Guest of Honor and our hostess was the Honorable Congresswomen Eleanor Holmes Norton. The Congresswomen thanked the students for allowing their works of art to be displayed for all members of congress to see.

Look for future postings on the summer programs that PSA 402, WARL, and WHS are coordinating. We will be featuring our first Caring Kids Camp this summer!

PSA 402 Meet & Greet 2009

The Fourth District PSA 402 had a community Meet & Greet on February 18, 2009. Ms. Mary Sanford and Commissioner Judi Jones (4B07) presented the Officers and Officials of PSA 402 a certificate of appreciation, for their hard work and dedication to the job.
Many residents of PSA 402 were presented with a certificate of appreciation for their hard work and dedication to the community we live and work in.
Special thanks to the ones who organized the event (Ms. Mary Sanford & Commissioner Judi Jones), and those who contributed to the event (various community members, Peaches Kitchen, PSA 402 officers & officials, and evening staff of the Fourth District Station).
A/C Diane Groomes and A/C Peter Newsham joined us for this festive event. Commander Linda Brown greeted the community, but had an emergency meeting to attend in PSA 404.
Thank you to those who were able to attend and hope the ones who were not able to will be able to make it to one in the future.

President Obama visits PSA 402

Obama has busy final day before taking office as Bush says farewells

President-elect Barack Obama dashed across the city on his final day before taking office as he paid tribute to the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and called on Americans of all ages to perform acts of service to help the government rebuild the fabric and the spirit of communities across the nation.

"Given the crisis that we're in and the hardships that so many people are going through, we can't allow any idle hands," Obama said. "Everybody's got to be involved. Everybody's going to have to pitch in. I think the American people are ready for that."

As tens of thousands of citizens arrived here from all corners of the country, traveling to the capital to see the inauguration of the 44th president just before noon on Tuesday, Obama opened his day by visiting wounded troops at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and concluded it by honoring his former Republican rival, Senator John McCain.

"We will not always agree on everything in the months to come, and we will have our share of arguments and debates," Obama said, speaking to a bipartisan audience at one of three banquets he attended on Monday evening. "But let us strive always to find that common ground and to defend together those common ideals, for it is the only way we can meet the very big and very serious challenges that we face right now."

While contributors flocked to black-tie dinners, other revelers filled the Mall, eager to catch a glimpse of the spot where Obama will be sworn in. Though Washington became virtually mired in gridlock, there seemed to be more waving flags than blowing horns as people navigated the city's crowded corridors.

Obama delivered a few test runs of his Inaugural Address, which advisers said would be about 20 minutes long. The final draft of the speech was largely written by Obama himself, after he studied several previous addresses that were given at times of great challenge to the nation.

"I'm not going to make a long speech," Obama said as he entered Calvin Coolidge High School on Monday afternoon to take part in a community service project. "I've got to save my best lines for tomorrow."

His appearance a few hours earlier at the Sasha Bruce House, a shelter for homeless teenagers here, allowed Obama to make good on a promise to become more involved with his new home city, even as he showed his stripes as an ordinary guy in the process. With a paint roller in one hand, he joked, "This is good practice, because I'm moving to a new house tomorrow."

Deborah Shore, who founded the shelter 34 years ago, said later in a telephone interview, "He painted very well, I might say." She added: "They have said that they're going to have a different relationship with the city than has often been, a deeper, closer relationship. I think this is proof of that."

In his final day in the White House, President George W. Bush was out of the spotlight on Monday. He spent his morning on the telephone calling the leaders of Brazil, Britain, Denmark, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Japan, Russia and South Korea. Bush also spoke with Vicente Fox, the former president of Mexico.

A White House spokesman, Gordon Johndroe, said the president had thanked the leaders for their cooperation and hospitality over the years.

In one sign that power in Washington is about to change hands, the White House issued a quick correction on its statement late Monday afternoon about the selection of Alan Lowe, a former National Archives official, as director of Bush's as-yet-to-be-built presidential library and museum.

The statement originally went out by e-mail, under the customary headline: "Statement by the President." Two minutes later, the White House sent it out again, under the headline "Statement by the Bushes" — a reflection that the library is not a public endeavor, but a private one.

MOTORISTS FACE MORE THAN PEDESTRIANS ON SPEED AWARENESS DAY(S)

On November 18th and 20th, 2008, in response to traffic concerns voiced by local residents and schools officials alike, officers of the Metropolitan Police Department (Fourth District, PSA 402)conducted “Speed Awareness Day(s)”.

Riggs Road NE as well as Kansas Avenue NE are two major thoroughfares traveled daily by inbound/outbound Maryland commuters. Because these two arteries have been widely criticized by area residents due to speeding, special traffic enforcement was given to these two routes.

Students in grades 3 thru 6 from area schools such as: LaSalle Elementary School, Roots Public Charter School, Ideal Academy, and Hope Charter School, took an active role in bringing attention to “speed awareness.” Participants from the mentioned schools displayed hand-made posters highlighting the flagrant disregard (some) motorist display by speeding through school zones and, by failing to observe pedestrians. In addition to the attention grabbing posters, students also verbalized their frustrations to motorists by chanting “SLOW DOWN” as they drove by.

As a result of intense traffic enforcement during Speed Awareness Days’, MPD Officers issued dozens of moving infractions, including violations for: speeding, use of cell phone, and non-use of seat belts.

Disobeying traffic regulations will not be tolerated in the District; in an effort to uphold traffic rules and regulations, PSA 402 officers will continue to conduct sporadic traffic enforcement along these and other routes in the future.
For information on how to have a Speed Awareness Day at your school please contact Officer Heather Straker at (202) 715-7418 or heather.straker@dc.gov
